Derby, Windjana Gorge, Tunnel Creek
Departing Broome at 7.00am with a pick up from your accommodation this morning we’ll travel through the remote and beautiful landscape of the Western Kimberley, learning of local history, people and the environment crossing the Fitzroy River and visiting the famous Boab Prison Tree. We arrive in the township of Derby located on the tidal mud flats on the edge of the King Sound known for having the highest tidal range of any port in Australia prior to beginning our journey on the remote cattle track, the Gibb River Road. A short stop at the wonderful Mowanjum Aboriginal Art & Culture Centre introduces us to the Wandjina & Gwion Gwion spirits, so important in this region. We continue our travels towards the Napier Range, once a Devonian reef these escarpments are over 350 million years old and home to a diverse array of animals and plants. The perfect place to experience the stunning natural beauty of an outback oasis is the 3.5km geological wonder of Windjana Gorge and then exploring Tunnel Creek, a 750-metre cave system carved through the Range, in which we discover stalactites, secret caves and a variety of wildlife. It is here we also learn the legend of Jandamarra, an Aboriginal freedom fighter who used the tunnel as a hide out in the late 1800’s. As the sun sets we journey through the Oscar Range and groves of majestic Boab trees before arriving at our comfortable accommodation on the banks of the Fitzroy River.
Stay: Fitzroy River Lodge
Halls Creek, Spring Creek Track
This morning we depart Fitzroy Crossing, breaking the journey to the Bungle Bungles with a visit to the gold rush town of Halls Creek. We then depart the main highway to venture into Purnululu National Park by way of the 4WD Spring Creek Track where late afternoon we arrive in the Bungle Bungles, our home for the next 2 nights.

Bungle Bungles Tour
We have a full day to explore the highlights of this extraordinary World Heritage protected Purnululu National Park, the most famous of which, are the Bungle Bungle domes. Rivers created this landscape of unique orange and black striped ‘beehive’ geological formations over a period of 20 million years. Unbelievably, only the locals knew it existed until the early 1980’s; once discovered by others, the area was made a national park in 1987. We explore Echidna Chasm (2km), known for its towering Livistona Palm trees, and take a short walk (2-3km) into stunning Cathedral Gorge, where towering rocks create a natural amphitheatre. This evening view a sensational sunset enjoying drinks & nibbles
Stay: Bungle Bungles
Optional Bungles Helicopter Flight, China Wall.
This morning we have the option of an inspiring helicopter scenic flight over the Bungle Bungles (from $395.00 per person) that will surely be a highlight of your trip. Heading back out by way of the Spring Creek Track we visit the interesting natural feature of China Wall. A natural quartz formation that runs six kilometres along the landscape, the wall is an echo of that for which it was named – the Great Wall of China. Continuing towards Fitzroy Crossing we may call into the remote Yiyili Aboriginal Community, known for it’s outstanding art and progressive school (visit subject to opening times).
Stay: Fitzroy River Lodge
Geikie Gorge Boat Tour
An early departure takes us via Danggu Geikie Gorge National Park where we explore the magnificent Darngku by boat. Nature carved this spectacular 30m deep gorge between the ranges during the Devonian geological period. The best way to experience the scenery and abundant wildlife of this natural wonder is to join the Danggu Geikie Gorge Ranger-guided Cruise (included). Danggu Geikie Gorge floods during the wet season, with the swirling water leaving its bleached mark on the colourful gorge walls. Though the water retreats during the dry season, permanent water remains to sustain the wide variety of Kimberley wildlife. Departing Fitzroy Crossing we traverse the West Kimberley, crossing the Fitzroy River once again prior to arriving in Broome in the late afternoon where our tour concludes.
